Over the years Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has been acquiring firm over firm for improving its navigation portfolio and now Apple has got another success in this domain. Apple has declared the acquisition of Coherent Navigation on Sunday. The Coherent Navigation’s technology uses both high-altitude GPS satellites and lower-altitude voice and data satellites (from Iridium) to boost the accuracy of a GPS.

Macrumors who first reported the acquisition said that Coherent Navigation satellite tracker can have the potential to provide location information to within few centimeters. This is a great bonus point for Apple. Macrumors further reported Coherent Navigation’s CEO Paul Lego is now assigned to Apple Maps capacity whereas Coherent Navigation’s co-founders are serving on location-themed engineering roles ground.

After the Acquisition Apple has given its traditional statement to New York Times, “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,”

The terms of the deal hasn’t disclosed yet and neither did the closure time of the deal. The number of workers of the Coherent Navigation including the CEO has joined the Apple before the announcement of acquisition with the co-founder began their tech journey through the platform of Apple last month. On April 30, Coherent Navigation servers were officially transferred to pin to Apple servers, Macrumors reports. LinkedIn reports showed that Lego joined Apple in January with co-founders joining in April.

Apple is also allegedly working on its own electric car which is speculated to come in 2020. The car will be supported on self-driving capabilities as is supposed. Now this highly-accurate GPS technology would play an important role in that effort. The smartphone users will also able to use this technology.

Apple has made several acquisitions in previous years to improve its mapping technology and move away from Google maps. The acquisitions include developers behind Pin Drop, Locationary, WifiSLAM, Hopstop, Embark, and Broadmap.
