On Saturday, May 2nd, Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao took on Floyd “Money” Mayweather, in what was being called “the fight of the century”. This particular bout had been anticipated for years after it was originally supposed to happen in 2009, but a failure to reach an agreement between the two sides postponed it until 2015.

The agreement that was finally made had a 60/40 split of the purse in favor of Floyd Mayweather. Manny was guaranteed 50 million and Floyd was guaranteed 100 million regardless of how well pay-per-view and ticket sales went. The fight was only available to watch on TV via pay-per- view which cost $99.95. As for watching the fight live, there were 500 tickets initially available to the public for $1,500, $2,500, $3,500, $5,000, and $7,000 these tickets sold out within one minute of becoming available. 980 more tickets became available from StubHub, these ranged in price from the lowest sold for $2,959 to the highest sold for $40,955 with the average ticket being sold for $6,268. It is estimated that ticket sales combined with TV sales generated a purse worth over $300 million that will be split between Pacquiao and Mayweather.

There were plenty of celebrities in attendance for “The Fight of the Century” including: Jamie Fox, who sang the national anthem, Michael Keaton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Don Cheadle, Mark Wahlberg, Denzel Washington, Jay Z and Beyonce, Robert DeNiro, Ben Affleck, “Iron” Mike Tyson, and many more. Shortly before the fight, as part of the pre-fight festivities, the “$1 million title belt” was unveiled which was made with a kilogram of gold, and more than 3000 emeralds. Also part of the pre-fight show were five other fights, and several performances.

After all the buildup and hype for the fight, the majority of fans left feeling let down. Critics were quick to point fingers at Mayweather’s run and hug tactics and Pacquiao’s inability to land punches. The general consensus seemed to be that it just didn’t live up to the hype, but with a five year build up and the title of “fight of the century” how could it possibly meet expectations.

Despite the fans claiming it didn’t live up to the hype, both boxers will be going home with over $100 million. Mayweather is estimated to take home over $200 million, while Pacquiao is expected to take home over $120 million. The five year delay had a huge part in this, as it was estimated that in 2009 the same fight would have only generated $150 million. With inflation this would be about $165 million today, which is just over half of what the fight actually made. The $300 million purse makes this the richest fight in boxing history, even if it wasn’t the most exciting.

Shortly after the fight Pacquiao complained of a shoulder injury that hampered his performance in the fight. He publicly stated that he wants a rematch, to which Floyd responded that he would be open to another fight with Pacquiao. This means we could be in for another “fight of the century” as early as 2016. There’s no guarantee that this fight will be any more exciting than the previous fight. But the thing that is guaranteed is: if it does indeed happen, it’s going to make a lot of money.
