Facebook Inc. (NASDAQ:FB) is developing a new app, which will enable users’ to experience virtual reality environment through the platform of mobile phones, Wall Street Journal ears echoed. The app will allow the users to observe 360 degree or spherical video from different angles by tilting their phones.

A mobile-app wouldn’t provide as immersive experience as would the headset but the app would assist the firm to make people aware of the usefulness of the virtual reality devices.

Back in March, Mark Zukerberg announced that it would add spherical videos to its News Feed, further adding that users would be able to “move around inside the video and view it from different angles.”

The app will probably available for both Android and iOS platforms. Facebook’s CEO Mark Zukerberg has said on many occasions that “virtual reality will be the next computing platform after mobile devices.” Facebook bought virtual reality firm Oculus last year for $2 billion, which persuaded other firms to heavily invest in this sector.

Oculus along with slew of other companies announced that their virtual reality devices will be available in early 2016. The peers including Sony, HTC and Samsung have also announced their VR devices.

Sony Corp (ADR)  (NYSE:SNE) has announced it is working on a virtual reality device under the code name Project Morpheus and the device will hit the market in early 2016. HTC is making HTC Vive, a virtual reality device, along with the partnership of Vive. Samsung is working on its own VR device with the help of Oculus, which is slated to come later this year.

“Oculus firmly believes that VR will initially be popular with hard-core gamers and enthusiasts who are willing to invest in high-end desktop computers for gaming for the next two years,” said Deutsche Bank analyst Ross Sandler in a research note Friday. “Zuckerberg’s own vision is much broader than this, but it may take a few years to play out.”

Based on estimations of Deutsche Bank, roughly 1.5 million Oculus Rift headsets will retail in 2016. On the other hand, the projected mobile phone shipments in 2016 will surge two billion, according to market-research firm Gartner.
